We wish to acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land

High precision ground-based (spectro-)photometry of transiting exoplanets

[bra_border_divider top=’5′ bottom=’15’]

Dr. Ernst de Mooij, DAA

Characterizing exoplanet atmospheres requires very high-precision measurements. The decrease in flux during transit of a Jupiter-like planet around a Sun-like star is approximately 1%. The variations in transit-depth as a function of wavelengths due to the planet’s atmosphere are only a few percent of the transit-depth.

In this discussion, de Mooij will describe how astronomers can use ground-based telescopes to reach these high-precisions, as well as some of the problems encountered and their solutions.
