We wish to acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land

Dr. David Law

Assistant Astronomer

Pronouns:

he/him

Department:

Dunlap

Research:

the formation, properties and evolution of galaxies and their dark matter halos.

Education:

PhD from the California Institute of Technology

David Law studies the formation, properties and evolution of galaxies and their dark matter halos. With instruments like the Hubble Space Telescope and the twin Keck telescopes, he observes very distant galaxies at a time of abundant star-formation.

Law is a member of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory collaboration. MaNGA is one of the programs in the next phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. In 2014, MANGA began a survey to obtain integral-field spectroscopy of 10,000 relatively nearby galaxies. While at the Dunlap, Law was part of the team at the institute that developed the project’s data-reduction pipeline, and optimized fibre-bundle design and the observing strategy.

Law received his PhD from the California Institute of Technology, and was a Dunlap Fellow from 2011 to 2014. He left the Dunlap to become an Assistant Astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute where he works on research and mission support for the James Webb Space Telescope.
